I-135 to close for construction work this weekend

WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has announced a full weekend closure of both northbound and southbound Interstate 135 in Wichita for construction and maintenance activities. The closure is scheduled from the evening of Friday, June 6, through the early morning of Monday, June 9.

Closure Schedule:

  1. Friday, June 6, at 7 p.m.: Southbound I-135 will close from the K-254 interchange to just past the K-96 interchange to allow early pavement patching. The ramp from westbound K-96 to southbound I-135 will also be closed at this time.
  2. The newly built I-235 connector ramp to eastbound K-96 will remain open Friday night.
  3. Saturday, June 7, at 5 a.m.: I-135 will fully close in both directions. This includes: Northbound I-135 at the K-96/I-135 interchange I-235 ramps to southbound I-135 I-235 connector ramp to eastbound K-96
  4. Northbound I-135 at the K-96/I-135 interchange
  5. I-235 ramps to southbound I-135
  6. I-235 connector ramp to eastbound K-96

During the closure, KDOT crews will conduct pavement patching, bridge surface repairs, and adjustments to the barrier wall.

Detours and Travel Advisory:

Northbound traffic will be detoured to eastbound K-96. Motorists will exit at Hillside Street and loop back via westbound K-96 to return to northbound I-135. Please note: drivers will not be able to access Hillside Street in either direction from the K-96 detour route.

All lanes and ramps are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, June 9.

KDOT urges motorists to allow extra travel time, follow all posted detour signs, and use alternate routes where possible. Drivers should exercise caution and remain alert while traveling near the construction zone.
