Phase 3 Begins on Newton's S. Spencer Road Reconstruction Project
The City of Newton has announced that construction has entered Phase 3 of the ongoing S. Spencer Road reconstruction project, bringing new traffic patterns for motorists traveling through the area.
With the transition to the new phase, both northbound and southbound lanes are now open between East 1st Street and Southeast 9th Street, allowing two-way traffic through the first two sections of the project.
In Phase 3, which stretches from the K&O Railroad to Southeast 14th Street, traffic has been reduced to southbound travel only. Drivers heading north through the area are being directed to follow the signed detour using Hillside Road, Southeast Spencer Road and Southeast 14th Street.
The city also reminded motorists that the Connector Road remains limited to southbound turns only, with no northbound turns permitted.
Although portions of the roadway remain under construction, city officials said the surface is safe and functional for travel. Temporary asphalt-to-concrete transition wedges will remain at intersections until the project reaches its final stages.
The final lift of pavement will be placed across all three phases after the major reconstruction work is complete, providing a finished driving surface throughout the corridor.
City officials thanked residents and motorists for their continued patience as work progresses to improve S. Spencer Road.
