TOPEKA – Opening Day 2026 was impressive for the Hutchinson Community College women's track and field team on Friday.
The Blue Dragons broke four school record and earned five NJCAA Indoor national qualifications at the Washburn Rust Buster Classic at the Snead Indoor Athletic Facility in Topeka.
In addition to the records and qualifiers, the Blue Dragons had eight Blue Dragon all-time Top 10 performances and nine Top 10 event finishes.
Three of the records to fall lasted 38, 29 and 27 years, respectively.
The oldest record to be broken came in the women's shot put by freshman Xylavene Beale, who placed third in the event with a national qualifying mark of 47 feet, 8 1/2 inches (14.54 meters). After Friday's performances, that mark, ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA.
Beale broke the 1988 record of Ester Ikome.
Beale, on Friday, also earned a second national qualification with a ninth-place performance in the women's weight throw with a mark of 50-4 3/4 (15.36 meters), which ranks fifth on the Blue Dragon all-time charts.
Record No. 2 to fall on Friday came in the 60 meters where sophomore Sydney Holt beat the 1999 record of Jackie Ford with a time of 7.79 seconds. Holt beat the record by 0.2 seconds and just missed qualifying for nationals by 0.05 seconds in a ninth-place performance. Holt also finished 10th in the 200 meters with a time of 25.72 seconds, the third fastest in Blue Dragon indoor history.
Freshman Anecia Campbell had the best Blue Dragon individual finish at the Rust Buster on Saturday with a second-place performance in the 400 meters and a Blue Dragon record time of 57.71 seconds. That mark broke the 1997 record of Darcy Morris. Campbell missed the national qualifying mark by 0.24 seconds.
Coming off her All-America cross country season, freshman Ashara Frater broke the Blue Dragon 3,000-meter record previously held by Jordyn Picolet from 2025. Frater qualified for the NJCAA Indoor championships with a Rust Buster fourth-place time of 10:13.09.
Returning All-American Deisheline Mayer Scott posted two all-time Blue Dragon marks and qualified for the NJCAA Indoor championships in two events. Mayer Scott tied for sixth in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 43-8 1/2 (13.23 meters), which is the third-best mark in Blue Dragon history and currently No. 2 in the NJCAA.
Mayer Scott was seventh in the weight throw with a national qualifying mark of 52-10 3/4 (16.12 meters). That mark is No. 2 in Blue Dragon indoor history and currently No. 2 in the NJCAA.
Other top performances by the Blue Dragons from the Rust Buster Classic:
+ Freshman Rosa Min Paulsen placed third in the high jump with a clearance of 5-3 (1.60 meters). That mark currently leads the nation and tied for 10th in Blue Dragon indoor history.
+ Freshman Valentine Titren tied for the seventh-best time in Blue Dragon indoor history in the 60-meter hurdles with a Rust Buster 11th-place time of 9.44 seconds.
The Blue Dragon women's track and field team next compete at the NAIA/JUCO Challenge next Saturday at Pittsburg State's Plaster Center.
