HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann on Wednesday praised the passage by the House of Representatives of the Laken Riley Act. Riley was killed while jogging in Georgia.
"It turns out the person that did this crime had been picked up for theft a couple of times had been released and then did this atrocious act," Mann said. "What the Laken Riley Act does is it ensures that if someone's in the country illegally and they get picked up for a crime like theft, that they have to be deported."
Mann called the legislation, which was joined by dozens of Democrats, including Kansas Third District Congresswoman Sharice Davids, common sense.
"It's the right thing to do," Mann said. "I look forward to seeing it getting signed into the law and becoming a policy."
The legislation still has to get through the Senate, but with control switching over to new leadership, it is expected to happen relatively quickly.
