HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas legislative priorities for the National Federation of Independent Business are not much of a surprise, but a specific bill on energy usage is of interest.

"We are seeing in California, some pretty bad ideas as it relates to prohibiting the usage of gas for fuel in their municipalities," said Dan Murray with NFIB-Kansas. "Several municipalities in California have started to adopt bans on the usage of natural gas for businesses and residential use."

NFIB-Kansas wants to be sure those ideas can't come to the Sunflower State.

"We are seeking a bill that would prohibit municipalities from pursuing these kinds of ordinances," Murray said. "We balloted our members this fall, 88% of Kansas small business owners replied that municipalities should not be allowed to ban the use of various sources of energy, including natural gas."

Top priorities for the group this session include unemployment insurance reform, property tax transparency and decoupling of the income tax code.
