👟 Buhler wins two early titles as state track meet opens in Wichita

10:30 a.m. update

WICHITA, Kan. — Area athletes wasted little time making an impact Friday morning as the Kansas State High School Activities Association state track and field meet opened at Crossland Stadium on the Wichita State University campus.

Classes 4A, 5A and 6A competed during the morning session, with the smaller classes scheduled to begin competition Friday afternoon. As of the 10:30 a.m. update, Buhler had already won two Class 4A state titles, while several other area athletes earned medals or advanced to Saturday finals.

STATE CHAMPIONS

Buhler junior Corbin Starkweather won the Class 4A girls 3,200-meter run in 10:55.81.

Buhler senior Jenna Lackey won the Class 4A girls pole vault by clearing 11-6.

ADVANCED TO FINALS

Buhler freshman Bayleigh Miller advanced to the Class 4A girls 100-meter hurdle final after finishing sixth in preliminaries in 16.13.

Buhler senior Zach Friesen advanced to the Class 4A boys 110-meter hurdle final after finishing second in preliminaries in 14.93.

The Buhler girls 4x100 relay team of Aaliyah Leving, Jenna Lackey, Addysyn Keller and Sofia Spies advanced to the Class 4A final after finishing fourth in preliminaries in 49.63.

The Newton boys 4x100 relay team of Landyn Rains, Ethan Adams, Ryder Mapes and Kane Wise advanced to the Class 5A final with the top preliminary time of 42.28.

TOP-EIGHT FINISHERS

Buhler sophomore Isabella Friesen finished fourth in the Class 4A girls 3,200 in 11:15.71.

McPherson senior Caleb Muehler finished second in the Class 4A boys 3,200 in 9:27.90.

Buhler junior Gavin Lindahl finished third in the Class 4A boys 3,200 in 9:32.22.

Buhler sophomore Garrett Gleason finished second in the Class 4A boys high jump at 6-2.

Pratt senior Arley Morrell finished seventh in the Class 4A boys high jump at 6-2.

McPherson senior Karsen Burris finished sixth in the Class 4A girls javelin at 126-6.

Newton senior Amiyah Beard finished fifth in the Class 5A girls shot put at 37-10.5.

Newton senior Ryder Mapes finished seventh in the Class 5A boys long jump at 21-11.5.

OTHER AREA RESULTS

Newton freshman Maggie Kepley finished 18th in the Class 5A girls 3,200 in 12:04.25.

McPherson senior Elley Paulson finished 10th in the Class 4A girls 100-meter hurdle preliminaries in 16.71 and did not advance.

Hutchinson junior Isabel Castaneda finished 14th in the Class 5A girls 100-meter hurdle preliminaries in 17.11 and did not advance.

Newton junior Olivia Gonzalez finished ninth in the Class 5A girls shot put at 35-10.

Buhler sophomore Lauren Welch finished 15th in the Class 4A girls javelin at 107-3.

Buhler junior Sabella Regier finished ninth in the Class 4A girls pole vault at 10-0.

Buhler senior Khloe Blackwell finished 13th in the Class 4A girls pole vault at 9-6.

Buhler sophomore Ryan Cherry finished 11th in the Class 4A boys 3,200 in 10:10.65.

McPherson senior Jayren Stutzman finished 11th in the Class 4A boys high jump at 6-0.

Buhler freshman Bishop Holmes finished 12th in the Class 4A boys high jump at 6-0.

Buhler junior Dexter Fleeman finished 14th in the Class 4A boys high jump at 5-10.

Buhler junior Owen Kneisel finished 12th in the Class 4A boys 110-meter hurdle preliminaries in 15.72 and did not advance.

Pratt senior Tiger Thompson finished 17th in the Class 4A boys 110-meter hurdle preliminaries in 16.90 and did not advance.

The McPherson girls 4x100 relay team of Amara Dossett, Andi Buschbom, Ella Wyssman and Adri McLeod finished 10th in the Class 4A preliminaries in 50.29 and did not advance.

The Newton girls 4x100 relay team of Ryah Bristol, Maisie Brubacher, Ashley McMullin and Delaney Fuller finished 11th in the Class 5A preliminaries in 50.21 and did not advance.

The Pratt boys 4x100 relay team of Ty Staats, Carlito Lara, Cade Liggett and Arley Morrell finished 12th in the Class 4A preliminaries in 43.50 and did not advance.

The Buhler boys 4x100 relay team of Jacob Miller, Max Harmony, Dexter Fleeman and Zach Friesen finished 16th in the Class 4A preliminaries in 44.85 and did not advance.
