
SHAWNEE COUNTY—Authorities say an outdoor burn pit is responsible for a fire at a Kansas home.
Just after 3:30a.m. Wednesday, crews responded to a fire at a home at 1900 SE Michigan Avenue in Topeka, according to Fire Marshall Todd Harrison.
Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the roof of the single story home. Two occupants were able to evacuate prior to the fire departments arrival and crews extinguished the blaze.
A preliminary investigation indicates the fire cause to be accidental, associated with an outdoor burn pit. The estimated dollar loss – $12,500.00; of which $10,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $2,500.00 associated with contents loss, according to Harrison.
As a result of the fire, two adults and two dogs were displaced. Working smoke detectors were not located within the structure of fire origin.
