KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals acquired former Hutchinson Community College pitcher Nolan Hoffman from the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday in exchange for right-hander Manuel Colón.
Hoffman, who turns 29 on Sunday, had a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for Philadelphia this season. He spent most of the year with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, going 1-4 with a 4.72 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings.
Hoffman pitched two seasons at Hutchinson Community College before transferring to Texas A&M. He remains the Blue Dragons’ career leader with 161 innings pitched and 169 strikeouts.
As a sophomore in 2017, Hoffman went 8-1 with a 3.43 ERA and 82 strikeouts in 78 2/3 innings and was named to the Region VI Division I All-Tournament Team. He earned second-team All-Jayhawk Conference honors as a freshman after going 8-3 with a 3.06 ERA and 87 strikeouts.
Hoffman made his major league debut last season and has also pitched in the Mariners, Orioles and Rangers organizations.
Colón, 19, went 2-1 with a 5.83 ERA in 22 appearances between the Arizona Complex League and Class A Columbia this season.
