BNSF earnings sluggish in 1Q report

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — BNSF Railway released its first quarter earnings on Monday.

The nation’s second-largest railroad reported total revenue of $5.4 billion, a drop of 6% from the same quarter last year. Net income fell 5% to $1.19 billion.

Carloading revenue continued to fall led by a continued decline in coal shipments, which fell 12% to $766 million. Overall carloading revenue fell 6%. Total cars moved by the railroad fell 5% to 2,336,000 loads.

BNSF operates about 12 trains per day through Reno County including Amtrak’s SW Chief.

The railroad is the second-most valuable company on the tax rolls in the county with a total valuation of $11.2 million and total property taxes paid in 2019 of $1.7 million.
