Martha Jane Althaus Nickels, 92, of Hutchinson, died April 24, 2020, at Waldron Place Assisted Living, Hutchinson. On September 3, 1927, she was the seventh child born to Arthur A. and Arnie V. (Nelson) Althaus, in Turon.

Jane attended the Preston and Turon public schools. She graduated from Turon High School in 1945, attended Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, and taught at Turon Grade School.

Jane married Clarence A. Nickels, in 1947. They moved to the Plevna area in 1949, where they raised their children.

She is survived by her children, Paula (Darrell) Johnson of Kansas City, and Andy (Rebecca) Nickels of Plevna; grandsons, Rob (Angie) Johnson of Wichita, Ryan Johnson of Kansas City, MO, Cody (Kelsy) Nickels of Langdon, and Clint (Emily) Nickels of Plevna; granddaughter, Rhonda (Shane) Davis of Wichita; great-grandchildren, Makenna Johnson and Cole Johnson of Wichita, Cohen Johnson and Reese Johnson of Kansas City, MO, and Case Nickels of Plevna.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Kenneth, Floyd, and Howard Althaus; sisters, Gladys Yarberry, Mildred Blaine, Vada Reiser, and Helen Goldston; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Per her request, a graveside service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, 2020, at the Neola Cemetery, Turon, with Pastor David E. Green officiating. Friends may sign the book from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2020, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, April 27, 2020.
