County administrator releases list of potential cuts

Posted Apr 20, 2020 2:11 PM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Administrator Randy Partington shed more light on a proposed $1 million cut to the budget for this year.

The proposal will go before the County Commission on Tuesday. The cuts, which are department-wide, range from 4/10ths of a percent for smaller departments to as much as 11.3% for larger departments. The cuts range from $1,000 in the chaplain line item to more than $120,000 in the courthouse capital outlay fund.

Most of the cuts came from deferring vehicle purchases and leaving unfilled positions vacant.  Other cuts include $14,000 from the district attorney’s office, $25,000 from the appraiser’s office, $30,000 from Rcat and more than $184,000 (in three different areas) from Public Works. The cuts total $1,004,624.

Partington says the 2021 budget will be just a little tight as the county may be looking at a reduction in revenue by as much as 8%.

The County Commission meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. The meeting will be streamed online.

A previous version of this story mentioned potential cuts to TECH, Mental Health and the Museum. That was due to a misreading of the original documents. Hutch Post regrets the error.
