Landfill fees, buildings part of Tuesday's commission meeting

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Commissioners will discuss and take possible action on the Landfill Master Plan during Tuesday’s agenda session.

The landfill, along with SCS Engineers, is recommending the rates for the 2021 budget year remain the same as the current FY2020 rates. With the economic uncertainty and the scale relocation project, the landfill believes this is the best option for FY2021.

SCS Engineers says the operating fund balance of the landfill will be in a deficit in 10 years by not increasing this year, but that is if there are no increases after the 2021 budget year. The landfill is also in the process of doing an extensive rate study with SCS to determine what will be in the best interest of Reno County to proceed further in the future on fees. Currently, county residents pay $96 per year while out-of-county users have a tipping fee of $33 per ton. The master plan calls for a possible $4 increase to county residents in the fiscal year 2022 with a $2 increase each year to $106 in 2025.

The master plan for the landfill also includes a new scale house and a convenience center for equipment.

Tuesday’s meeting of the Reno County Commission begins at 9 a.m. and will be streamed live.
