Land acqusition for Cow Creek project approved by council

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council approved the final piece of land acquisition needed for the Cow Creek stormwater project during Tuesday’s regular meeting.

The piece of property is located along East Avenue G between Cleveland and Plum, and runs in between the K and O railroad and the Cargill Salt rail spur. The purchase price was $370,000.

Hutchinson Public Works engineer Jeff Peterson said the city purchased six parcels of land for the project that carries an estimated price tag of $11.6 million.

The project will include widening the Cow Creek ditch from the intersection of East Avenue C and Maple, all the way to an area near East Avenue G and Severance. It also includes renovating or replacing several bridges on avenues F and G along with two railroad trestles.

Peterson says some utility relocation and demolition of building on the recently purchased property could begin yet this year. Most of the work will be done in phases so more local contractors can be used for the project.

Stormwater utility fees will pay for the project.
