Take care of your plants with the approaching cold snap

PLEASANTVIEW, Kan. — The area is facing subfreezing temperatures in the coming days. Overnight lows Sunday and Monday could be in the upper 20s.

Jason French with Stutzman’s Greenhouse says it would be a good idea to cover your garden.

“Anything that’s an annual, our flowers, our tomatoes, our peppers, that kind of stuff if we have the ability to cover it, using buckets, jugs and woven fabric, that can protect a lot of that,” French said. “Things like perennials, those things that have already been growing in our yard from last year they’re usually not bothered.”

French says that fruit trees might also suffer damage with the cold weather depending on how far along they are this season.

“There’s really not a lot we can do about it,” French said. “If they’re really booming and we get below that 28 degree mark we can have some damage to the bloom. If they’re not in bloom or they’ve already bloomed those kinds of temperatures won’t be a problem.

As far as your lawn goes, French says any planting or new growth should be able to withstand the cold.
