Calls to police decrease; domestic disturbance cases increase

Posted Apr 06, 2020 8:45 PM

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper says the department has seen a decline in the number of calls since the state's stay-at-home order was put in place.

But, as expected, domestic violence crimes are starting to increase as job losses and confinement are creating extra stress on lives.

“We have seen our call volume go down a little bit and obviously we are only responding to calls in progress,” Hutchinson Police Chief Jeff Hooper said. “There have been a couple of categories where we have seen our calls for service go up, specifically with domestic disturbance.”

Hooper says the department is also seeing an increase in property crimes.

“We are still experiencing some property crimes in the realm of burglaries and thefts,” Hooper said. “That’s why we put that specific business check and burglary patrol out to help curb some of that.”

As a reminder, the emergency accident reporting plan is still in effect. If you are in an accident and no injuries or driver impairment is involved, trade the necessary information for your insurance company. A report can be filed later with the police department.
