USD 309 school board to meet Monday

Posted Apr 05, 2020 11:00 AM

NICKERSON, Kan. — The Nickerson USD 309 school board will take action on a resolution that will allow the district to pay employees during the shutdown from COVID-19.

The resolution authorizes the district to continue wage payments to all regular employees, including regular salaried and hourly employees and employees under the current contract with the board who are instructed not to report to work on days they would otherwise be required to be working during an emergency closing.

Employees would be paid through June 30 unless the board takes action to authorize payment during a longer duration.

Also Monday, the board will have a lot of capital improvement matters to discuss including more discussion on replacing the running track and making improvements to the football field. One proposal from Hellas Construction would include replacing the track and could also include new goalposts and play clocks. The cost of the new track, along with all of the other track and field accessories such as runways, shot put rings and throw cages, totals just under $595,000. The goalposts and clocks would add another $33,000 to the cost.

The other proposal from Mid America Sports Construction would include repairs to the track, regrade and resod the football playing field and install new goalposts and clocks at a cost of around $347,000.

Any improvements to the football stadium were met with strong objection from some patrons in November, which came shortly after the district voted down a $29.9 million bond issue.

Monday’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the school district offices at 4501 W. 4th. The meeting will be streamed online.
