43rd Avenue bridge work set to begin in July

SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County Public Works Director Don Brittain gave an update on several bridge projects to the County Commission from his office in South Hutchinson Tuesday.

Three projects are currently underway. The 82nd Avenue project is now about 85% complete and, weather permitting, should be finished in the next few weeks. The Nickerson Boulevard bridge is nearing 75% completion and the Medora Road bridge north of 95th Avenue is about 45% finished.

The two major projects for this summer are getting ready to start. The 43rd Avenue bridge at Old K-61 is scheduled to start July 15. The project is expected to take as long as 18 months since work has to stop for trains to pass through the worksite. At the latest, the project should be finished by January of 2022.

The other project is the Nickerson Road bridge south of Nickerson. A pre-construction meeting is set for June 25. At that time, a startup date will be set. Brittain hopes the work will be done quickly enough that it only interferes with one wheat harvest.

Finally, the County Commission gave approval to a letter of support to KDOT for the Arlington Road bridge near Arlington. The county is seeking funding to pay half of the $1,250,000 cost of replacing the 200-foot span.
