Health Department addresses HIPAA

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Health Department has been getting many messages and comments from social media and other sources regarding disclosure of information on COVID-19 patients. The department wanted to emphasize that it is bounded by HIPAA laws. As such, officials are not able to disclose any identifiable information on any patient. It is important to follow these laws for the privacy of every person who:

· is being tested,

· is asked to self-isolate by medical professionals,

· self-isolates on their own as a precaution,

· has a lab-confirmed positive COVID-19 case.

This is stated in the COVID-19 and HIPAA Bulletin dated March 2020. The Health Department hopes you will understand and appreciate its professionalism in this matter.
