Now is the time to begin your garden

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It’s spring and many would normally be thinking about getting their lawns and gardens ready. If you are stuck at home for one reason or another, now may be the time to kick it into gear.

"There’s a lot of things that we are at the right time of the year for and there are a lot of things we are just on the verge of,” Jason French with Stutzmans Greenhouse said. “A lot of people are looking at something to do at home, well, there is a great outdoor activity.”

French says gardening is a great hobby for the entire family.

“It’s a great way to involve kids in some of those things,” French said. “Not only are you having something to do, you’re also producing some good, healthy produce to enjoy.”

With some people being idled because of COVID-19, French says more people are taking on gardening as an important food source.

“I think there is a little bit of that going on or that fact that as long as I’m here there’s one less thing I have to go to the grocery store for,” French said. “You know everything that happens to it from the minute it was planted till the time you start eating it.”

And while gardening is at the top of the list, it’s also time to think about your lawn.

“We’re starting to get some warmer weather, we’ve had some rains and things are beginning to green up,” French said. “It would really be a prime time to put some pre-emergent on, which is a weed preventer to eliminate crabgrass, sand burrs and foxtail.”

French adds that you can use a non-fertilizer formula on your flower beds this time of year.

In light of the outbreak of coronavirus and the widespread seasonal influenza, the greenhouse will remain open, but the Pleasantview Spring Celebration has been canceled.
