 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A Hutchinson man who exchanged gunfire with police following a five-hour-long standoff in 2019 entered guilty pleas to numerous charges in Reno County District Court. Twenty-one-year-old Brendan Jones entered pleas Tuesday to numerous counts of attempted first-degree murder. Sentencing is set for May 21.The incident began early June 20 with a reported shooting. Police found the victim in the case, Jacob Foley, with a gunshot wound to the thigh. Several hours later, police located Jones in a house in the 300 block of West 16th Avenue where the long standoff began.After a more than five-hour standoff, Jones opened the front door, walked outside, raised a .40-caliber handgun and fired multiple shots at officers. When Hutchinson police officers returned fire, Jones ducked back into the residence and continued firing shots from inside the home. Ultimately, Jones fired at least 11 shots at officers. Video establishes that one shot missed several officers by approximately three feet. Fortunately, no law enforcement officer was struck by gunfire. During the gun battle, seven Hutchinson police officers, two Harvey County sheriff’s officers, and a Reno County sheriff’s officer discharged their weapons, firing at least 150 rounds. Jones advised a negotiator he had been shot and requested help. He was ordered to drop any weapons and exit the residence. The number of times he was shot is difficult to calculate because of multiple grazing wounds. It is safe to assume he was shot at least eight times. He was immediately evacuated from the front porch area.Along with the eight counts of attempted first-degree murder, Jones also pleaded guilty to aggravated battery for shooting Foley and possession of a firearm by a felon.
