USD 309 school board seats remain open

Posted Mar 10, 2020 2:50 PM

NICKERSON, Kan — The Nickeson USD 309 School Board failed to reach an agreement on four candidates that applied to fill two positions on the board during Monday’s meeting.

Mike Sullivan representing Reno Valley and Mikeal Starns, R.J. Wensel and Larry Meadows in the South Hutchinson district all failed to get the necessary four votes from the five-person board.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Jeanne Stroh said while turning down four candidates may not give a good perception of the district she was confident in the current board and their ability to work as a team. “That is not an accurate perception,” Stroh said. “ This group of five is working together as a team.”

There are some options now for the board. They can wait and let the 2021 election fill the vacant seats, they can readvertise the two vacancies and the candidates that applied can reapply along with anyone else. Or they can readdress the current list of candidates and take action on it later.

The seats were vacated by Tammy Davis in the South Hutch district and Brian Teichmann in the Reno Valley district.
