Donald (Donnie Grandon) J. Caviness | 1942 - 2020 |

Donald J. Caviness, some knew him as Donnie Grandon, 77, of Hutchinson, died February 29, 2020, at his home.  He was born June 7, 1942, in Larned, to J.L. and Myrtle Irene (Roberts) Caviness.

Donald attended Sherman Junior High and Hutchinson High School and served in the United States Army from 1967-1969. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 12157 in South Hutchinson.  He was a chef and owned Don’s CafĂ© in Hutchinson and Don’s Place in Burrton.  In addition, Donald cooked for the Hutchinson Correctional Facility and Zaki’s.

Donald enjoyed attending flea markets and art shows.  He also enjoyed painting and showing his beautiful paintings.

On May 9, 1992, he married Jolene Marie Stafford in Hutchinson. 

Donald is survived by:  his wife of 27 years, Jolene; daughter, Kimberly Baker; stepson, Keith Wingert; stepdaughters, Kim Pelkey (Preston, and Kristy Guy (Kenny, all of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by:  his parents; brother, Victor Ronald Grandon Caviness; and sister, Shirley Darlene Stock.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2020, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson.  Military honors will be conducted at 5 p.m. by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.  Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary.  Memorials may be made to VFW Post 12157, South Hutchinson, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N.
