HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Reno County commissioners gave approval to contracts for two major bridge projects including the 43rd Avenue span. The 43rd Avenue low bid is from Bridges Inc. of Newton at a cost of $3,723,770. The bid was $904,000 over engineers' estimates.

Plans are to begin construction later this summer with the project taking 300 working days.

The board also approved a contract with A.M. Cohron and Son for the Nickerson Road project at a cost of $2,997,840. That bid came in more than $311,000 over the estimate. The cost of the two bridges exceeds what was bonded. Public Works Director Don Brittain says he has funds available to cover the extra costs of the projects.

The commission also approved a contract for engineering services for the Arlington Road bridge with Kirkham, Michael and Associates at a cost of $56,150.
