⛳ Trinity Catholic leads area teams at state golf

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Several Hutch Post-area golfers survived the cut Tuesday during the opening day of the KSHSAA state golf tournaments, while others saw their seasons end after the first round.

Hutchinson Trinity Catholic put together one of the strongest area performances of the day in Class 2A at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield. The Celtics are second in the team standings after shooting a 323, trailing only Salina Sacred Heart, which leads at 310. Trinity Catholic’s Miles Blaylock, Tyler Casebolt and Ian Shaw each shot 79 and are tied for eighth. Matt Armour shot an 86, Dean Nelson added an 88 and Seamus Hogan shot a 94. Sterling missed the team cut after shooting a 386. Cameron Morris advanced individually after shooting an 86, while Lane Weigel, Wyatt Newberry, Billy Higgins, Ian Dillard and Zac Wohler missed the cut.

Hesston also remains in team contention after Day 1 of the Class 3A tournament at Lake Shawnee Golf Course. The Swathers shot a 307 and are second behind Wichita Collegiate, which leads at 295. Isaac Rusche led Hesston with a 75 and is tied for sixth. Carter Frey shot a 76 and is tied for 12th, while Austin Penner and Reece Buhrman each shot 78 and are tied for 21st. Evan Koehn added an 81 and Aiden Bridgeman shot an 82.

In Class 4A at Hesston Golf Course, McPherson and Buhler both missed the team cut, but each team had golfers advance to the final round. McPherson shot a 321, one stroke behind the team cut, while Buhler shot a 326. McPherson’s Cole Cooper and Paxton Ingels each shot 76 and are tied for 16th. Buhler’s Isaiah Heredia shot a 77 and is tied for 20th. Pratt’s Beau Ferrell also advanced after shooting a 79 and is tied for 27th.

In Class 1A at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson, Hutchinson Central Christian’s Cael Kooiman is in third place after shooting a 73. Goessel’s Levi Schrag shot a 78 and is tied for ninth, while Central Christian’s Tyler Reed shot an 83 and is tied for 21st.

In Class 5A at Tallgrass Golf Club, Hutchinson’s Alex Haas missed the cut after shooting an 83.
