Just how remote are western Kansas towns?

Turns out several are amongst the most distant from a metro area in the U.S., based on travel time.

Using data sets from Oxford University's, Malaria Atlas Project and research published in Nature, the Washington Post sought to find what they call "the middle of nowhere."

Oakley ranked fourth with towns in population from 1,000 to 4,999 in distance from any metro area with a population larger than 75,000 people.

In the category of towns with populations of 5,000 to 24,999, Colby ranked the farthest away of any in the U.S.

Garden City was also ranked at the top of the list with populations of 25,000 or more.

Several other western Kansas towns made the list.
