Marvin W. Phipps, Sr., 91, of Hutchinson, died January 26, 2020, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson. He was born May 4, 1928, in Reno County, to John and Maude (Wimmer) Phipps.

Marvin joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1946, where he served as a mechanic. He worked as a mechanic most of his life. He worked for Davis-Child Chevrolet and Cessna Hydraulics, and taught mechanics at the Hutchinson Reformatory. Marvin worked on rebuilding cars in his spare time as well, and spent a lot of time tinkering in the garage. He enjoyed boating and often went to the lake or on camping trips with his family.  Marvin was a member of Walnut and Campbell Church of Christ, Hutchinson, and attended First Christian Church, Hutchinson, in recent years. On September 2, 1950, he married Julia ‘Peggy’ Frye, in Southwest City, Missouri. They shared 60 years together before her death on January 3, 2011.

Marvin is survived by: daughter, Pam Edwards(John, Hutchinson; sons, Bill Phipps (Rita, Mike Phipps (Denice, Bob Phipps, and Randy Phipps (Linda, all of Hutchinson, Doug Phipps (Susan, Camden, Tennessee; daughter, Cheri Phipps, South Hutchinson; 20 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; brother, Eldon Phipps (Pat, Florida; and sister, Louise Grady, Washington.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; stepmother, Effie Parker; wife, Julia 'Peggy' Phipps; daughter, Charyl Saiz; grandsons, Jeremy Edwards and Shane Phipps; and 13 siblings.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2020, at Elliott Mortuary, with Minister Jimmie Keas officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Marine Corps honors team. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
