HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The latest round of quarterly earnings reports kicks off Thursday when Union Pacific releases its 4Q report before the bell.

The nation’s largest railroad saw operating revenue fall in the third quarter of 2019 to $5.5 billion, a drop of 7%. Car loadings fell 8% as weather conditions continued to snarl traffic in the Midwest. It was the first time in memory that every shipping sector saw a decline.

The railroad is hoping for better numbers in car loadings but will continue to feel the pressure of the decline of coal shipments coming out of Wyoming.

UP runs an average of 25 trains per day through Reno County and is the fourth most valuable company in the county with a total valuation of over $7.6 million and nearly $1.2 million in property taxes paid in 2019.
