Gas prices steady in spite of Middle East tensions

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — No news, at least at this point, is good news when it comes to gas prices in Kansas.

"Despite crude oil price fluctuations and the geopolitical concerns we had with Iran last week, the national and Kansas gas prices stayed very steady at $2.58 nationally and $2.29 here in Kansas," Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas said. "We really saw no fluctuation from a week ago."

Prices in Reno County are a little above the state average, which is sixth cheapest in the country this week.

"Today's average in Reno County is $2.36 a gallon," Steward said. "In Hutchinson, we're seeing a range of $2.31 to $2.35 a gallon."

The fundamentals behind the price are actually improving for those who want to see it go down.

"We really have a healthy and growing level of domestic gasoline stocks alongside decreasing demand," Steward said. "That's common this time of year. Those two factors are really helping to minimize any gas fluctuations."

Barring other overseas developments, prices could continue to trickle down until the weather warms up in the spring.
