Police catch Kan. man after chase at 120mph, crash into deer

BARTON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man after a high speed chase and crash.

Just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday, an Ellinwood Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of South Main Street and learned the driver had a Barton District Warrant for his arrest.

The driver later identified as Shawn Aaron Cook, 30, Great Bend, refused to exit the vehicle.  Hled in the vehicle to South East 20 Road where he turned westbound and continued at speeds in excess of 120 mph and struck a deer.

After the crash, Cook temporarily lost control of the vehicle, the regained control and intentionally drove directly towards the pursuing officer, nearly striking the officer head-on.

Cook then drove into a field in the 700 block of SE 20 Road and traveled North bound for a short distance before his vehicle was disabled from the deer collision.

Police took Cook into custody without further incident and transported him the Barton County Jail where he was booked in on the Barton District Warrant for failure to appear, aggravated assault on law enforcement officer along with multiple traffic violations.
