Gene Wyatt Shelton, 88, died November 25, 2019, at Brookestone Acres, Columbus, NE. He was born May 3, 1931, in Hutchinson, to Wyatt E. and Gladys (Custer) Shelton. 

Gene graduated from Hutchinson High School and Salt City Business College. He was a proud Eagle Scout. Gene served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954. He was a bookkeeper at the Arlington Coop and manager of the Partridge Coop. Gene moved to Nebraska 20 years ago.  After retirement, he enjoyed spending his winters in Texas, camping, boating, and fishing.


On September 12, 1999, he married Lucile Ann (Greaser) Spence in Omaha, NE. 

Gene is survived by: wife, Lucile; children, Tom Shelton (Jo, Tim Shelton (Samantha, Gail Lewis (Steve); grandchildren, Michelle Shultz (Brad, Megan Smyth (Jason, Margo Haflich (Pete, Bryan Lewis (Hannah, and Scott Lewis; 16 great-grandchildren; stepsister, Patricia Alexander; stepchildren, Janet Heikes (Larry, Bret Spence; step-grandchildren, Renee Flegel (Nathan, Cale Heikes (Melissa); one step-great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.


He was preceded in death by: his parents, Wyatt and Gladys Shelton; the children’s mother, Florence Shelton; stepsisters, Elizabeth Clendenin, Maxine Williams; and stepbrother, Vernon Shelton. 


Graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2019, at Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Kansas, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may sign the book from 9:00 to 5:00 Friday and Saturday and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus, NE, or Quivira Council Boy Scouts of America, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N.
