Hutch Rec is hosting a youth workshop on an introduction to wind energy on Jan.27 at the Dillon Nature Center titled "Harnessing the wind: Build your own Windmill".

The workshop will give children the opportunity to explore how Kansas wind powers both traditional windmills and modern turbines through engaging, hands-on activities. Participants will build their own working windmill models and experiment with different blade shapes, sizes, and angles to determine which designs spin the fastest.

Hutch Rec says the event is designed to blend science, creativity, and problem-solving in a fun, age-appropriate environment. By testing design variables and seeing real-time results, children will gain a better understanding of renewable energy while developing critical thinking and basic engineering skills.

The workshop is scheduled for Jan. 27 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Registration is required, with a deadline of Jan. 25. Parents are encouraged to register early, as space is limited.

The Hutch Rec–sponsored event is geared toward curious young minds who enjoy building, experimenting, and learning how things work, and participants will leave with both a completed project and a greater appreciation for wind energy in Kansas.
