The Volunteer Center of Reno County, a United Way agency, is a central clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities in Reno County. Area non-profit and governmental organizations have submitted the following requests for help. AMERICAN RED CROSS needs volunteers to help at registration to check-in donors or register first time donors or serve food and clean up tables in the “canteen” at the during community blood drives. Volunteers are needed for 3-to-4-hour shifts during the blood drives.
CIRCLES is a proven, comprehensive approach to ending poverty though empowering circles of relationships. The goal is to help families leave poverty by surrounding them with a network of training, encouragement and support. Circle Allies are needed to be matched with a family to offer encouragement, guidance and friendship. Allies meet with their family at least one time per month, participate in a monthly meeting focused on eliminating community barriers to self-sufficiency and are invited to join in the weekly Community Meetings. Training is provided. Child Care volunteers are also needed during class times in the evenings to help supervise children while their parents are attending classes.
PLUM CREEK ELEMENTARY PRE-K assistants will be needed on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during the school year from 11:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Volunteers will help during lunchtime with opening milks, scraping off trays, answering questions, and then help with recess supervision after lunch. Volunteers should be patient, able to work with energetic children with a positive attitude, must be 16 years of age and will complete a background check.
REINS OF HOPE needs horse walkers and side walkers for their therapeutic riding classes. Horse walkers will focus most of their attention on the horse as they lead it, and side walkers will have their hands up and monitor the person riding during the classes. Potential volunteers need not be horse savvy; on the job training will be provided. This is a great way to get exercise, make new friends and benefit from helping the students. Volunteers are needed Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Volunteers are needed for Monday evenings as well from 5 p.m.-8 p.m.
RENO COUNTY COURTHOUSE elevator operators are needed once a week Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.– 11 a.m., 11 a.m.-2 p.m., or 2 p.m.-5 p.m. Volunteers must be good natured, able to work with the public, be dependable, be able to stand, and successfully operate the older style elevator after training.
