HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday evening in Hutchinson, according to a media release from the agency.
Just after 9 p.m., officers with the Hutchinson Police Department responded to reports of an armed female pointing a rifle at residences in the neighborhood of N Adams St. and W 28th Ave. When four officers arrived, they located Cassondra M. Scott, 50, of Hutchinson, in the street.
Preliminary information indicates at 9:20 p.m., after making contact with Scott, she pointed the rifle at the officers, prompting one officer to fire multiple times, striking Scott.
Officers rendered aid until EMS arrived and transported Scott to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was transferred to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis where she was later pronounced deceased.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
A pellet rifle was recovered at the scene.
This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.
When this investigation concludes, case findings will be presented to the Reno County District Attorney for determination of charges.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One person is in critical condition following a shooting in north Hutchinson late Sunday night.
According to dispatch, the incident was reported at approximately 9:11 p.m. in the 200 block of West 28th Avenue.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and located an individual with serious injuries. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.
Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the shooting, and it is unclear if any suspects have been identified or taken into custody.
The investigation remains ongoing.
