HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After putting together one of the top freshman seasons in recent Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball history, KaMyra Barber is headed to the Division I level.

Barber has signed with the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, where she will join the Mean Green women’s basketball program for the 2026-27 season.

The Hutchinson freshman guard made the announcement after a decorated first year with the Blue Dragons, one that ended with national recognition and a deep postseason run.

Barber became the 20th player in Hutchinson women’s basketball history to earn NJCAA All-America honors, landing honorable mention on the 2026 NJCAA Division I All-America team earlier this month. She helped the Blue Dragons continue a recent stretch of national success, marking the third straight season and fourth time in the last five years Hutchinson has produced an NJCAA All-American.

The Wichita native and Wichita Heights graduate played a major role in leading the Blue Dragons back to the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, where Hutchinson advanced to the quarterfinals with two tournament victories.

Barber opened the national tournament with one of her best performances of the season, finishing with 21 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in a 54-50 comeback win over Williston State. She followed with 14 points and eight rebounds in a 64-53 victory over No. 4 seed Northwest Florida State, then added 16 points and six rebounds in a quarterfinal loss to Clarendon. Her performance across the tournament earned her a spot on the 2026 NJCAA All-Tournament Team.

Barber also collected major conference honors during her freshman campaign. She was named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Freshman of the Year and earned first-team All-KJCCC honors. She became the seventh player in program history to be selected as KJCCC Freshman of the Year.

She led Hutchinson in both scoring and rebounding this season, averaging 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while also contributing 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals per contest.

Barber finished with six double-doubles as a freshman. She scored a season-high 23 points twice, against Murray State and Colby, and pulled down a regular-season high of 13 rebounds against Independence.

She shot 40 percent from the field and 29.1 percent from 3-point range, knocking down 37 of 127 attempts from beyond the arc.

Barber’s freshman numbers also placed her among the best first-year players in program history. Her 475 total points rank 10th on Hutchinson’s freshman scoring list, while her 246 rebounds tie Jackson Patterson’s 2011 total for 13th on the Blue Dragons’ freshman rebounding chart.
