🏊‍♀️ Hutchinson leads area teams at Class 5-1A state swimming and diving

LENEXA, Kan. — Hutchinson finished 15th in the team standings to lead Hutch Post-area teams at the Class 5-1A girls state swimming and diving championships, held Thursday through Saturday at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center.

The Salthawks scored 51 points. Hesston tied for 19th with 24 points, Buhler tied for 27th with 10 and McPherson tied for 32nd with five. Lansing won the team championship with 290 points, edging Blue Valley Southwest, which finished with 279.

Hutchinson had multiple scoring performances, led by AJ Gooch and Alayna Wiggins. Gooch placed seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 11.73 seconds, and added a 16th-place finish in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.70. Wiggins placed 10th in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.18 and 12th in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.29.

Hutchinson also scored in two relays. The Salthawks placed 10th in the 200 medley relay in 2:01.80 with Julianna Stivers, Gooch, Wiggins and Morgan Most. Hutchinson was 11th in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.07. The Salthawks also placed 20th in the preliminaries of the 400 freestyle relay in 4:18.60.

Hesston was led by Angela Ewert, who reached the championship final in two events. Ewert placed sixth in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.57 and eighth in the 500 freestyle in 5:45.69. Hesston also finished 23rd in the preliminaries of the 200 medley relay in 2:11.30.

Buhler scored in two relays. The Crusaders placed 15th in the 200 medley relay in 2:07.53 with Hannah Swain, Evey Brooks, Avery Schrader and Regan Walle. Buhler also placed 14th in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.94. Swain added a 23rd-place finish in the 100 freestyle preliminaries in 1:01.67.

McPherson’s Adyson Wiens placed 12th in the 200 individual medley in 2:27.74. Wiens also finished 21st in the 100 butterfly preliminaries in 1:11.03. The Bullpups were 19th in the 200 medley relay preliminaries in 2:09.91.
