McPherson Co. Sheriff's Department investigating phone scam

MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson County Sheriff's Department is investigating a scam that was reported by a resident.

According to the sheriff's office, the scam is a phone call from a concerned citizen in reference to a family member being contacted by Capt. Doug Anderson and directed to purchase a $500 gift card from Walmart because they missed jury duty. The individual was directed to bring the gift card to the jail and drop it off. They were told they would eventually get their money back after reporting for jury duty.

A phone number of 620-798-3009 is being used as a "County Sheriff's Office" number. If you call the number, it has a generic robot voicemail and does not specify an individual agency. The voicemail is set up to replicate a legitimate agency. Do not answer any calls from this number and contact your local law enforcement agency through a number you know to be legitimate if you have any concerns.
