The Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present the May Small Business Award to Visionaries Eyecare owned by Dr. Steve Miller.
Dr. Miller’s journey is a great example of building a business around both passion and purpose. After graduating from optometry school, he opened his first practice in Buhler in 2005 and spent the next decade building strong relationships with his patients and community. In 2016, he sold that practice and joined a larger vision group. But over time, it became clear that the corporate model of healthcare was not aligned with the kind of personalized care he believed patients deserved. So, in January 2020, he made the courageous decision to start over and open Visionaries Eyecare in downtown Hutchinson.
As you can imagine, opening a business in 2020 came with unexpected challenges. After only three months, Visionaries was forced to temporarily close due to COVID restrictions. But Dr. Miller used that time to regroup, refocus, and strategically grow the business. One of the most important decisions he made was building the incredible team that surrounds him today.
That team has helped Visionaries experience tremendous growth while still maintaining the values that matter most: personalized care, honesty, transparency, and work-life balance. Dr. Miller has intentionally created a workplace culture where employees feel appreciated, supported, and empowered to use their individual gifts and personalities. From educational trips to staff outings and regular one-on-one social time with employees, he has built what he describes as a true “work family.”
Visionaries has also become a leader in specialized eye care by investing in advanced dry eye treatments that are not available anywhere else in Hutchinson. Dr. Miller and his team are committed to offering high-quality products at fair prices, supporting independent eyewear manufacturers and labs whenever possible.
What really stands out, though, is the philosophy behind the business. Dr. Miller believes success is not simply measured by revenue or size, but by creating an enjoyable atmosphere where patients feel heard, valued, and cared for. In a world where so much healthcare feels rushed and impersonal, Visionaries has intentionally gone the other direction — taking time to truly listen to patients and build lasting relationships.
Dr. Miller and his team are also passionate supporters of downtown Hutchinson and our local business community. They intentionally shop local, collaborate with neighboring businesses, and continue finding ways to make our community stronger.
