Freshman Olivia Tamaki scored 6 minutes, 15 seconds into the first overtime to lead the No. 19 Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Dodge City in the opening round of the Region 6 Tournament at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
The Blue Dragons (12-2-4) will now meet the Butler Grizzlies in the semifinals on Wednesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. Game time for that match will be announced on Monday.
For the second-straight meeting with Dodge City, the Conquistadors packed all 11 players behind the ball to limit Blue Dragon scoring chances. The Blue Dragons attempted 30 shots in regulation time and 13 got through to the goal, but Conquistadors keeper Lucy Goss had 13 saves in regulation time.
The play that led to Takami’s goal started with Dodge City trying to clear its defensive end. Blue Dragon midfielder Beatrice Sales intercepted a long pass attempt. As she moved forward, Dodge City deflected her pass toward the right sideline.
The ball came right to Tamaki, who drove 15 yards to her right past a defended and launched a screened shot from about 25 yards out over the head of Goss for the game winner.
The unassisted goal was Tamaki’s ninth of the season and her second game winner of 2025.This was the second-straight year that Hutchinson defeated Dodge City in the opening round of the Region 6 Tournament 1-0 in overtime. Last season the Dragons defeated the Conquistadors won in double overtime.
Hutchinson outshot Dodge City 33-3, including 14-1 in shots on goal. Blue Dragon keeper Evie Carvell (9-2-4) made one save in the game, which came in the first half.
