CONCORDIA – Making her first start of the season, freshman outside hitter Lauren Vazquez posted her first career double-double and led dominant third and fourth sets to lead the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team to a 3-1 KJCCC victory on Wednesday at Cloud County.

Hitting just .149 over the first two sets, the Blue Dragons hit a combined .500 in sets three and four and defeated the Thunderbirds 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-12 at Arley Bryant Gym.

The Blue Dragons returned to the .500 mark at 6-6 overall and are now 2-3 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson plays Central Wyoming, North Idaho, Eastern Wyoming and Colorado Northwestern in the Eastern Wyoming Classic this weekend in Torrington, Wyoming.

Hutchinson extended its winning streak over Cloud County to 19-straight matches.

Vazquez led the Blue Dragons with season highs of 13 kills and 16 digs in her first career start. Vazquez hit .310 on 29 total attacks. She added two block assists and one ace. Vazquez hit .643 in the final two sets to lead a dominant Blue Dragon attack with nine kills and no errors on 14 attacks.

Sophomore Jaylynn McNeill hit .409 on 22 attacks and finished with 12 kills. Sophomore Atlyn Proctor had eight kills and two blocks. Freshman Mattie Galliher hit .384 on seven kills and sophomore Alondra Villanueva had seven kills and five total blocks.

Freshman setter Alexandra Garcia had 27 assists, four digs and two aces. Sophomore setter Angela Reupena had 25 assists and two digs.

Freshman libero Clara Oliveira had 14 digs and an ace. Sophomore middle Kierny Follmer had five total blocks, including one solo block.

The Blue Dragons hit a season-high .338 on 57 kills. The Dragons had eight team blocks and six ace serves.

In splitting the first two sets, the Blue Dragons had 24 kills and 14 attack errors. They had 29 kills and only two attack errors combined in sets 3 and 4.

Set 1: Trailing 6-3, the Dragons went on a 7-1 run to lead 10-7 after Galliher smacked down a Cloud over-pass. A McNeill kill gave the Dragons a 14-10 lead, but the Dragons could never shake the Thunderbirds despite hitting .303 in the opening set. Leading 18-17, the Dragons built a 20-17 lead on a Follmer kill and Villanueva/Galliher double block. Garcia dropped an ace serve for a 22-19 lead, but Cloud tied the set at 23-all. A Proctor kill off the block was upheld after a T-Bird challenge for a 24-23 lead. Oliveira had an ace on set point to give the Dragons a 25-23 win.

Set 2: The Blue Dragons hit .000 in the second set, but led 10-8 after a Follmer ace serve. Trailing 16-15, the set got away from the Dragons as Cloud went on a 6-0 run to take command. The Dragons had three players with two kills each, falling to Cloud 25-20.

Set 3: Trailing 5-2, the Dragons turned things around led by Vazquez, who had six kills and no errors on nine attacks in the set. A Garcia ace and McNeill kill tied the set at 5-all. Vazquez then had a four-point service run, which included an ace to lead 9-6. A 5-1 run upped the lead to 17-10 after a Villanueva kill. The lead grew to eight at 20-12 on a Vazquez kill. The Dragons scored the final three points of the set for a 25-16 win and a 2-1 match lead. The Dragons hit .517 in the set.

Set 4: The Blue Dragons started fast in the fourth set and never looked back. Galliher's kill on an over-pass gave the Dragons a 6-1 lead. A Follmer solo block gave the Dragons a 13-4 lead. Hutchinson hit .480 in the set and added three blocks to complete their most decisive set victory of the season.
