Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes completes behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce in preseason game vs Detroit
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes completed a behind-the-back pass to longtime tight end Travis Kelce on the Kansas City Chiefs' second drive against the Detroit Lions on Saturday, injecting a little bit of life into the preseason game. Mahomes was rolling to his right and started to get some pressure from Detroit defensive lineman Josh Paschal when he zipped the pass behind his back to Kelce, who was dragging across the field. The completion on third-and-3 at the Detroit 33 was good for 9 yards and a first down, and eventually led to a field goal. Mahomes has fooled around with behind-the-back throws in practice but has never completed one during a game.
South Africa's du Plessis retains middleweight UFC title
PERTH, Australia (AP) — South African Dricus du Plessis took a flurry of body hits across four rounds before defeating Israel Adesanya by submission to retain his middleweight championship at UFC 305. After scoring some early takedowns, du Plessis (22-2) had to withstand a flurry of body strikes from Adesanya through the middle rounds which appeared to be taking a toll on the 30-year-old South African as the fight progressed. But a left hook followed by three rights helped bring Adesanya down in the fourth round which gave du Plessis the opening he wanted as he swiftly got the choke hold which forced the Nigerian-born New Zealander to tap out.
Hideki Matsuyama surges to a 5-shot lead in steamy Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Hideki Matsuyama is running away with the FedEx St. Jude Championship in sweltering Memphis, Tennessee. The Japanese star hit another great 3-wood over the water to set up eagle. He shot a 64 and built a five-shot lead going into the final round. Nick Dunlap had a 66 and was in second place. Scottie Scheffler had three bogeys in his round of 69 and Sam Burns was all over the map in his round of 70. They were seven shots behind. The focus now shifts to the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings who advance to the BMW Championship.
College football begins next weekend with No. 10 Florida State facing Georgia Tech in Ireland
It's almost time. College football is about to ramp up again. There are a handful of games next Saturday, including No. 10 Florida State taking on Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland. Led by defensive end Patrick Payton and offensive tackle Darius Washington, the Seminoles are a popular pick to repeat as Atlantic Coast Conference champions. Josef Newgarden wins St. Louis-area IndyCar race for 5th time and 4th in 5 years
MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Josef Newgarden won for the fifth time at World Wide Technology Raceway on Saturday night, taking the lead during a late pit stop and holding off teammate Scott McLaughlin on two restarts. Newgarden survived a partial spin-out on Lap 196 in the 260-lap race, keeping his No. 2 Chevrolet out of the wall as he turned sideways coming out of Turn 2. Newgarden has been dominant on the track just outside St. Louis, winning for the fourth time in the past five years. His winning streak ended last year, when he crashed with 49 laps to go. It was a sweep for Team Penske's No. 2 cars at the track, after Austin Cindric won the NASCAR Cup race this year.
NASCAR's Austin Dillon goes to Michigan with no regrets for wrecking Joey Logano and Denny Hamilin
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Austin Dillon has no regrets over his aggressive actions that triggered last-lap wrecks for Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin before Dillon went on to win at Richmond Raceway and had NASCAR later revoke his automatic spot in the playoffs. All three are scheduled to compete on the same track again Sunday in the Firekeepers 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The checkered flag seemed out of reach for Dillon last weekend until the final seconds when he spun Logano out of the way and sent Hamlin into the wall at Richmond.
Caleb Williams runs for TD, leads 2 scoring drives as Bears beat Bengals 27-3
CHICAGO (AP) — Caleb Williams made another good impression in his first appearance at Soldier Field since Chicago drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick, running for a touchdown and leading two scoring drives, and the Bears beat the Cincinnati Bengals 27-3. Williams got off to a slow start coming off an impressive and brief showing last week at Buffalo in his first preseason appearance. Chicago went three-and-out on its first three possessions. The former USC star then showed the arm and elusiveness the Bears are banking on, leading them to a field goal and scrambling for a touchdown. Williams completed 6 of 13 passes for 75 yards against Cincinnati's backups, including a 45-yarder to fellow rookie Rome Odunze. He ran for a 7-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.
Dallas QB3 Trey Lance finds groove in Cowboys' victory in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy wants quarterback Trey Lance to find a comfort zone and play within his capabilities. Forget living up to being the No. 3 overall pick by San Francisco out of North Dakota State in 2021, the key is assuring McCarthy the Cowboys didn't make a mistake in trading for him nearly one year ago. The 24-year-old acquitted himself quite well Saturday in Dallas' 27-12 exhibition victory in Las Vegas. After starting quarterback Dak Prescott's backup, Cooper Rush, played the entire first quarter, Lance threw for 151 yards and completed 15 of 23 pass attempts, including his first touchdown as a Cowboy over the final three quarters.
Noah Kent, Jose Luis Ballester win matches to reach US Amateur title match
CHASKA, Minn. (AP) — Iowa sophomore Noah Kent and Jose Luis Ballester of Spain will meet for the U.S. Amateur title after winning semifinal matches at Hazeltine. Kent made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole to stay 1 up, and he took control when Jackson Buchanan went into the water off the tee on the 16th. Kent wound up winning 2 up. Ballester took his first lead on the ninth hole and he seized on mistakes by Masaveu on the 13th and 14th holes in his 3-and-2 victory. Ballester is a senior at Arizona State. Kent and Ballester already are assured of playing the Masters and U.S. Open next year.
Top-ranked Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner reach semifinals in Cincinnati
MASON, Ohio (AP) — Top-ranked Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner fended off challenges Saturday to reach the semifinals in the Cincinnati Open.
