High water levels have forced the closure of several campgrounds at Cheney Reservoir through the holiday weekend.

On the east side of the lake, Heimerman Point, M-and-M, and Wichita Point campgrounds are closed. Hobie Beach campground on the west side is also closed.

Park officials say staff have spent the day contacting campers with reservations and moving them to other campsites whenever possible. However, all available campsites for this weekend have now been filled.

Officials say they are only rescheduling reservations for this weekend at this time. They'll continue monitoring lake levels before making decisions on future campground closures and reservations.

Visitors are reminded that barriers have been placed at the entrances to the closed campgrounds. Officials ask that no one drive around the barricades, including with UTVs, as the closures are in place for public safety.

Anyone with questions about reservations or campground closures is encouraged to contact the Cheney State Park office at 316-542-3664.
