The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team has had its ups and downs in Dayana Acevedo-Trent's first season as head coach.
The biggest upswing came Wednesday night when the Blue Dragons rallied from two sets down to reverse sweep the Butler Grizzlies in the opening round of the Region 6 Tournament in El Dorado.
Now the sixth-seeded Blue Dragons (15-17) go after another upset as they face second-seeded Colby (23-6) in the second semifinal on Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. The match is scheduled for no earlier than 7:30 p.m. or 60 minutes after the conclusion of the Barton-Dodge City semifinal.
The Blue Dragons play in a Region 6 Tournament semifinal for the first time since 2022. They have not been in a championship match since 2018 and haven't won the region since 2017.
Hutchinson has won 10 Region 6 championships in program history.
The Blue Dragons are 0-2 this season against the nationally ranked Trojans getting swept twice this season.
On September 10 at the Sports Arena, Colby won 25-19, 25-20, 25-17. The Dragons held Colby to a season-low at that point of the season .130 hitting. Jaylynn McNeill and Atlyn Proctor had seven kills each for the Dragons. Karlotta Kattai had 13 kills to lead Colby.
The Blue Dragons battled Colby in the rematch on October 11 in Colby. The Dragons dropped three tight sets 25-21, 25-21, 25-22.
Alondra Villanueva had seven kills to lead the Dragons. Lena Mihaljica had 10 kills for Colby.
