🏈 Gouldsby shines in road victory

DODGE CITY, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson (5-0, 1-0) scored in all three phases of the game in a road victory at Dodge City (1-5, 1-2).

Kordell Gouldsby caught a touchdown pass and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. He had another score taken away on a Dragon penalty.

Gouldsby finished the day with three catches for 39 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on an 84-yard kick return after a Blue Dragon safety.

The Dragons jumped out to a 14-0 lead before a flea flicker went awry. Christian Johnson had his pass intercepted and Dodge City turned it into three points.

Hutchinson secured the first 14 points on Gouldsby's 27-yard touchdown catch from Johnson. The Dragons scored again after a Da'Mun Allen interception led to a Rashaud Hurt 20-yard receiving touchdown.

After an Adam Pineiro 27-yard field goal to begin the second quarter, the score sat at 14-3 until midway through the third quarter.

Darius Wiley got the scoring going again when he sacked Ed Merriweather III in the end zone.

Gouldsby took the ensuing kickoff 84 yards to the house.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Derrick Salley Jr. got on the board with a 10-yard receiving touchdown. Salley Jr. finished the day with seven receptions for 135 yards and the score. He leads the nation with nine receiving touchdowns.

Lekedrin Harvey broke through the middle of the Conquistador defense for a 21-yard run to make the score 37-3.

The Dragon defense finished off the scoring with a 33-yard scoop-and-score by Brice Summerall.

Allen finished the day with five tackles and two interceptions.

Johnson threw three touchdowns and had two interceptions on 16-for-29 throwing for 230 yards. Johnson led the rushing attack with 70 yards.

The Dragon offense saw its red zone streak come to an end. The Dragons entered the game a perfect 13-of-13 but only scored twice on four chances Saturday.

Hutchinson returns to Gowans Stadium Oct. 18 for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Independence. It will be Hutchinson's first home game since Sept. 13.
