HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department issued 86 citations and 27 warnings during a statewide traffic safety campaign aimed at reducing speeding and improving roadway safety.

The campaign, conducted Oct. 8-19, involved increased traffic enforcement by law enforcement agencies across Kansas. Hutchinson officers conducted 107 traffic stops during the 12-day initiative.

The effort focused on encouraging motorists to obey posted speed limits and raising awareness about the potentially deadly consequences of speeding.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding contributed to 11,288 traffic deaths nationwide in 2024, accounting for 29% of all traffic fatalities that year.

The agency warns that speeding increases stopping distances, reduces a driver's ability to maintain control and increases the severity of crashes.

Law enforcement officials continue to encourage drivers to follow posted speed limits and adjust their speed for weather, traffic and road conditions.
