Sheriff: Kan. woman was kidnapped before her murder

SHAWNEE COUNTY – Law enforcement authorities investigating the death of a woman have identified the victim as 58-year-old Deborah A. Stephens of Topeka.

Just before at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, deputies from the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 800 block of SW 57th Street for a death investigation, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Deputies arrived on scene and discovered Stephens who was dead.

After a preliminary investigation deputies arrested Jon K. Ewing, 61, of Scranton and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of voluntary manslaughter.

Upon further investigation, authorities amended the voluntary manslaughter charge to murder in the first degree, according to Christian.

Ewing is also being held on a requested charge of with aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, criminal threat and interference with law enforcement, according to Christian.

He remains jailed on a $1,000,000.00 bond, according to online jail records.  Authorities have not released how Stephens died.

Authorities have not released the name of the victim or details on how she died.
