MANHATTAN – All five Blue Dragon golfers figuring in the team scoring are in the Top 8 and the Hutchinson Community College men's golf team has a 22-stroke lead over the field after two rounds of the NJCAA Region 6 Championship on Monday at Colbert Hills Country Club.
The Blue Dragons shot rounds of 297 and 303 in windy conditions on Monday for a 36-hole score of 600 (24 over par). Garden City is second at 622 (314-308). Dodge City is third at 636 (327-309).
The final round is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The Blue Dragons will be paired with Garden City and Dodge City with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. off Hole No. 1.
The Blue Dragons posted a round of 297, the only round of under 300 all day, in the opening round. Freshman Hugo DuQuaine led Hutchinson with a round of 70. The Blue Dragons also counted Jack Northgraves' 75 and 76s from Joe Austin and Corey Scullion.
Northgraves shot a 74 to lead the Dragons' 303 score in the second round. Hutchinson also counted DuQuaine's 75, Austin's 77 and Scullion's 78.
DuQuaine is the tournament's individual leader at 145. He had five birdies and three bogeys in his opening-round 70. He had three birdies and five bogeys in his 75 in the second round.
DuQuaine has a four-stroke lead over second-place Northgraves, who recovered from slow starts in both rounds. Northgraves was 4-over par after seven holes in the first round, but played the remaining 11 holes in 1-under to close at 75. Northgraves was 5-over on the front nine in round 2, but played the back nine in 3-under par to close at 74.
Austin is fifth at 153. Scullion is tied for sixth at 154. Freshman Grant Hatzenbueher is eighth at 155 after rounds of 78 and 77 on Monday.
The Blue Dragons have three players competing as individuals at the Region 6 Championships.
Lincoln Barnes is tied for 15th at 162 (80-82). Matt Vearncombe is tied for 18th at 164 (81-83). Hudson Sauder is 23rd at 173 (90-83).
