With Halloween approaching, the Hutchinson Police Department is urging parents, children and drivers alike to take extra precautions to ensure a safe and fun night of trick-or-treating.
Lieutenant Wes Vaughn joined the BW Morning Show to share reminders about pedestrian and traffic safety, costume visibility and candy inspection ahead of Friday’s festivities.
“Our biggest concerns are traffic and pedestrian issues,” Vaughn said. “Sometimes drivers are distracted or focused on their own trick-or-treaters, so we ask everyone to drive safely and deliberately—don’t just go on autopilot.”
Vaughn encouraged parents walking with their children to stay closest to the street while kids walk closer to the homes. He also advised designating one adult without face paint or headgear to maintain full visibility and awareness throughout the evening.
Once the sun goes down, Vaughn said carrying a flashlight—not just a phone light—is essential. “That helps you see the ground but also helps motorists see you,” he explained. Reflective vests are ideal but not always costume-friendly, so proper lighting is the next best thing.
Vaughn also reminded families to watch for uneven sidewalks and slick leaves that could cause trips or falls. “It’s been a rainy October, so puddles can hide cracks or dips in the pavement,” he said.
When it comes to candy safety, Vaughn emphasized that parents should inspect all treats before children dig in. “Look for pinholes, torn wrappers or anything that looks like it’s been rewrapped,” he said. “If you see anything suspicious, stop and call us—we’ll check it out.”
For any safety concerns or suspicious activity on Halloween night, Vaughn said residents should not hesitate to call 911, even for non-life-threatening situations. “Our dispatchers are a great resource,” he said. “Those calls are recorded and help us respond appropriately.”
As for drivers, Vaughn’s message was simple: slow down in neighborhoods and keep your view clear. “Kids get excited and may dart into the street without looking,” he said.
