🏀 Dragons look to rebound with Tuesday trip to Indy

The No. 20-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team concludes a two-game road trip on Tuesday and looks to rebound from its first Jayhawk Conference loss of the season on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons (6-2, 1-1 KJCCC) plays at the Independence Pirates (3-5, 0-2 KJCCC) in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff at the Oakes Family Fieldhouse in Independence.

The game will be broadcast live on Blue Dragon flagship station KHUT-FM (102.9) and on sister stations KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) beginning at 5:15 p.m. with Sean Boston (PBP) calling the action. The game will also be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 5:15 p.m.

Hutchinson comes off its worst offensive performance in a 56-44 loss to No. 14 Butler on Saturday in El Dorado.

The Blue Dragons were held to season lows for points scored, field goal percentage (32.1 percent), free throws (5 of 8) and points in the first half (15 points). Freshman Whitney Brown led the Dragons with 10 points.

Despite the offensive woes on Saturday, the Blue Dragons are still averaging 71.8 points per game and allowing 59.2 points per game.

Freshman KaMyra Barber is Hutchinson's leading scorer at 15.1 points per game. Sophomore Katie Duncan averages 13.0 points per game and Brown averages 10.1 points per contest.

The Pirates enter play on Tuesday having lost three games in a row. The last two games have been especially tough for the Pirates who lost to Colby 57-24 and Coffeyville 62-29.

The Pirates shot 18.9 percent against Coffeyville (9 of 49), including 0 of 13 from 3-point range. Nyah Chandler led Independence with 10 points.

Independence is averaging 51.3 points per game offensively while shooting 32.5 percent overall and 22.8 percent from 3-point range.

Guard Mimi White is Independence's leading scorer at 10.3 points per game. Danaiya Stillwell-Smith averages 9.5 points per game.

The Blue Dragons have won seven-straight games against Independence, including wins of 66-34 and 90-49 last season. Hutchinson leads the all-time series with the Pirates 43-15, including 12-4 in games played at Independence.

Entering play on Tuesday, Blue Dragon head coach John Ontjes is two victories shy of 300 wins in Jayhawk Conference-designated games. Ontjes is 298-60 in regular-season conference games in his Blue Dragon career.
