
ANDOVER, Kan. — The Hutchinson High School baseball team dropped a pair of games at Andover High School on Thursday, falling in Game 1, 13-4, and in Game 2, 5-1.
The losses drop the Salthawks to 0-8 on the season, while the Trojans improve to 6-2.
Hutchinson will host Derby on Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
Game 1: Andover 13, Hutchinson 4
Hutchinson led 3-0 after the third and pushed its advantage to 4-1 in the fifth before Andover erupted for six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control.
The Salthawks built their early lead in the third. Merrick Brotzman drew a walk and Landon Haugsness followed with a double before Gabe Valadez reached on an error that allowed two runs to score. Later in the inning, Valadez came home on a delayed steal of home as Hutchinson grabbed a 3-0 edge.
Andover got on the board in the fourth on an RBI double by Luke Schumacher, but Hutchinson answered in the fifth when Haugsness scored on an error by the Trojans.
The game turned in the bottom of the fifth.
Andover scored six times in the inning, taking advantage of a string of Hutchinson miscues. The Trojans tied the game at 4 on an RBI double by Parker Lane, then moved in front for good when Lane scored on an error. Andover added two more runs later in the inning, including another on a hit that was misplayed in the outfield, to stretch the lead to 7-4.
The Trojans poured it on in the sixth with six more runs. Shayden Ruud delivered an RBI triple, Lane added an RBI single, Ian Holt launched a two-run homer and Braeden Hill capped the inning with a two-run shot to left.
Hutchinson finished with just four hits, with Valadez and JuJu Lyons collecting two apiece. Lyons had two singles, while Haugsness doubled and scored. Valadez drove in two runs and scored once.
Brodie McCuan took the loss for the Salthawks after working into the fifth inning. Gage Tilson earned the win in relief for Andover.
Game 2: Andover 5, Hutchinson 1
Hutchinson took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Gabe Valadez was hit by a pitch and courtesy runner Ethan Parks came around to score when Landon Haugsness reached on an error by first baseman Parker Lane.
Andover answered in the bottom of the fourth.
Gage Tilson drew a walk and Shayden Ruud followed with a single before Lane tied the game with an RBI groundout. The Trojans then moved in front for good when Ruud scored on an error, and added two more runs later in the inning on a two-run single by Tanner Brown that was misplayed in the field, stretching the lead to 4-1.
Andover added an insurance run in the fifth when Ruud delivered an RBI single to score Ryan Hatfield after his leadoff double.
Hutchinson managed just three hits in the nightcap, with JuJu Lyons and Haugsness each collecting singles in the first inning and Hutchinson scoring its lone run on an error in the third. The Salthawks also drew two walks and were hit by three pitches, but could not cash in after leaving Lyons at third in the opening inning.
Bailey earned the win for Andover, allowing one unearned run while striking out eight over six-plus innings. Valadez took the loss for Hutchinson after allowing four runs, with only one earned, over four innings.
