George D. Abney | 1940 - 2020 |

George David Abney, 80, formerly of Hutchinson, died peacefully at his home August 21, 2020. He was born February 22, 1940, in Denver, CO, to Vant LaVerne Abney and Marie Gladys (Soldan) Fisher. 

George graduated from Sheridan High School in Denver, CO and proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, from 1963-1965. George worked for Hobart Food Equipment, in Wichita, for 25 years before following his true calling by towing and servicing vehicles for AAA until 2013. George was a gifted mechanic and loved working on old cars; a trait he passed on to his grandsons.    

On June 25, 1976, he married Diana Gail Proffitt in Denver, CO.  They recently celebrated 44 years or marriage.

George was a born-again Christian and is survived by his wife, Diana Abney of Kingman; daughter, Melissa Stevens of Mecca, IN; brother, Jack Beagle (Linda) of Arvada, CO; sister, Fran Lukachy (Steve) of Frederick, CO; grandchildren, James Abney (Ashley) of Mecca, IN, Andrew Abney (Oakley) of Rockville, IN, Emily Corbett of Salina, Abigail Casey of Hutchinson, and Kaleb Casey of Park City; 4 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Matthew David, a daughter, Crystal Ann; a brother, Ray Abney; and sisters, Sharon Dabney and Ella Osborne. 

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2020, at Elliott Chapel, with Dr. Ron Caskey officiating.  Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson, with military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the George Abney Memorial Fund, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS  67501.
